Around 7 million people in the UK are suffering from Tinnitus. In fact, Tinnitus can have many different causes, but most commonly results from otologic disorders - the same conditions that cause hearing loss. The most common cause is noise-induced hearing loss, resulting from exposure to excessive or loud noises.
Below, some further causes of tinnitus:
- Ear infections
Infections can lead to issues with interpreting noise which in turn can lead to tinnitus. - Ménière’s disease
Is a disorder of the inner ear that can affect hearing and balance. - Presence of earwax
A build up of wax can end up blocking the ear and has also been known to be a cause of tinnitus. - Stress
Stress and anxiety can intensify the effects of the ringing in the ears. Because of this individuals with Tinnitus need to manage the stress in their lives to minimise the effects.
- Medications/drugs
Recent investigations have shown that some people can develop tinnitus symptoms from using some drugs like antibiotics, aminoglycosides, diuretics, quinine and aspirin. However, this is usually if the dosage is too high.
